This is a theory/essay sort of thing I came up with after Rebecca Sugar confirmed that multiple individuals of the same gemstone exist. Now, that’s kind of unsettling, right? “There’s multiple Rubies and Sapphires roaming Homeworld, being cute and gay somewhere in space? That ain’t right.”
But it’s okay, I promise! We’re going to discuss how this is 100% okay and not weird at all! BUCKLE UP!
So, let’s discuss actual Gems for a second, the core of every Gems being. Pearl has stated multiple times that the Gems at their core are simply that: gemstones. They act very similar to a computer in that they can glitch up if damaged and can even become stronger by linking together (fusion).
All computers, even the ones made of the same model and make from the same computer, have slightly different hardware. It’s impossible to make every hard drive and mother board exactly the same (especially when you’re throwing in minerals like Silicon into the mix). This means that all computers of the same model have slight variations in runtime and processing power.
That’s right, all computers essentially have ‘personalities’ in a sense. Now let’s compare this to a Gem:
Ruby’s Gem is cut into a cabochon with a square in the middle. Since Rebecca has stated multiple Rubies exist, your first instinct is to imagine a bunch of identical Rubies running around and lighting carpets on fire, right?
Well, much like a hard drive, it’s impossible to cut every Gem perfectly. Even micrometers of error can completely change a computers runtime, so if we stick to the idea that a Gem functions like a computer, then minute differences in their cut and clarity can affect their personality.
So you don’t have copies of Rubies boiling every pool to extinction! Think of it like this: “Gem” defines a superace (much like a human), and “Gem Type”, like Ruby, Pearl, Amethyst, etc., defines a subrace in the overall Gem race (like subraces in humanity).
So, “Sapphires” defines a group of Sapphire-type Gems that might have huge differences between them due to the differences in their Gem cut. As well as this, Gems can be labeled as “flawed” (poor Pearl D:) in reference to their function or personality.
If we look at Gems as having a caste-like society, much like bees or ants, we can immediately see some flaws in their way of thinking. Since Gem Homeworld is currently ruled by a triumvirate (consisting of Yellow, Blue, and White Diamond) we can assume that they’re the only Gem of their type. If we compare these leaders to a Queen Bee or Queen Ant in real-life, then we can also assume they have a successor and legions of followers. (Also Gems are all-female presenting, worker bees are all-female. Just thought I’d point that out haha).
Striation in Gem society seems to be based on an arbitrary decision of how valuable your Gem is. Amethyst seems to be shaping up to be a pretty common Gem if we take her creation as a soldier to heart, while Pearl has explicitly been mentioned as having multiple iterations of her species.
We also don’t know if personality traits are carried through Gems, so our Pearl’s neurotic tendencies could be specific to her: another Pearl might be very war-hungry or aggressive. But alas, like a lot of stuff in Steven Universe, we just don’t know.
